Get this: Leonora claims she was never paid a single cent for her performance in the iconic film, even though she was just five years old at the time!
In a video clip that’s gone viral, Leonora spills the tea on how she was promised payment when she turned 21, but she’s now 42 and still hasn’t seen a dime from the production company. You heard that right, folks: the poor girl’s been waiting for over two decades for her well-deserved compensation.
But that’s not all – it turns out that Leonora isn’t the only one who got the short end of the stick. The late Nǃxau ǂToma, who played the role of Xi in the original The Gods Must Be Crazy movie, was also paid a pitiful salary for his work. Despite the movie’s massive success and N!xau’s global fame, he was given a measly R243, equivalent to just US$300 at the time.
What’s more, the director of the movie, Jamie Uys, has been caught in the crosshairs of this scandal. He’s claiming that N!xau didn’t understand the importance of paper money, so he just let it go. Really, Jamie? We’re not buying that excuse, and we’re pretty sure fans of The Gods Must Be Crazy won’t either. It’s high time for production companies to start treating their performers fairly and with the respect they deserve.
