Personal Life
Thembsie and her mother were abandoned by her father and she grew up with her mother alone. She was married for 36 years to the late Peter Sebotsa who was an Anglican minister. Her husband was found drowned in the family’s pool in June 2019. Matu has one daughter Namosa and a son Neo. She resides in Brackendowns, Alberton, South Africa.
The actress got inspiration to pursue acting after watching a play in the East Rand called the Gibson Kente. So her acting career started in South Africa theatres entertaining people with her humorous and lively performances.
In 2021, the South African actress was confined to the Netcare Clinton Hospital for five weeks due to covid 19. She has since been vaccinated an urges her fellow South Africans to do likewise.

In 1987 she made her professional stage debut professionally in the play Sekunjalo. After that she played in the plays What A Shame in 1989 and Give A Child the same year followed by Mama’s Love in 1994 and Lahliwe in 1999.
Thembsie played various roles in several drama series namely, Mama’s Love, Lahliwe in 1999, Tshisa in 2006 as Nomathamsanqa for six years, The Lab from 2006 until 2008 as Zinhle , uGugu no Andile mini-series in 2008 playing the guest role of ‘Teacher’ and on Rhythm City e.tv soap opera playing the guest role. Other television series she made guest and supportive roles include, Zone 14, Gaz’lam, Home Affairs, Zero Tolerance, Jacob’s Cross, Finding Lenny a comedy film in 2009, Abo Mzala second season on SABC1 sitcom as Zodwa, Intsika in 2011, Soul Buddyz, The Wild, Moferefere Lenyalong, Rockville, Thandeka’s Diary, MTV Shuga and Thuli no Thulani amongst others.
In Addition, Matu played the character of Novezake on Insika of SABC1 television series in its first season. The same year she also played the supportive role of Mrs Vilakazi on Soul Buddyz TV series. The following year she featured as Getrude on The Wild TV series and on Moferefere Lenyalong on SABC2, season 2 as Boreg. She again played the role of Sis Ribs on Rockville in 2013. Her popularity increased through the Mzansi Magic telenovela called the Queen when she played the role of Petronella ‘Sis Pat’ from season 2 upto season 6.
Apart from television acting, she appeared in the most popular commercial for the Doom insecticide. In 2019, she co-hosted the show Fragrance Your Life’ aired on etv.
Thembsie is constantly described as a fun-loving person with a bubbly personality. She continues to use her celebrity status to give back to the community to make her country better by buying school uniforms for the less-privileged children in her community. She has got her own agency and training school for up and coming actors called Thembsie Matu Dramatic Arts School.
