WHO IS GIBSON MAKANDA, AND WHY DO SOUTH AFRICANS TALK ABOUT HIM?

According to BuzzSouthAfrica, some conspiracy theories believe that Nelson Mandela is not the man who liberated South Africa.

These theories claimed that Mandela was long dead when the liberation all happened, with some saying he died around the 1980s in prison.

The theorists believed that after Mandela’s death, the apartheid government replaced him with Makanda.

They claimed that Gibson Makanda was the man who negotiated and later ruled South Africa later on.

During his rule, some South Africans questioned Mandela’s policies, calling him irrational for a former freedom fighter.

All this made some people believe more in the Gibson Makanda conspiracy theory.

They claimed that Winnie Mandela’s sentiments towards Nelson were more literal than figurative, according to BuzzSouthAfrica.

The reports claimed Winnie once said that Mandela Robben Island and returned a stranger to her.

A man she did not know anymore.

WHAT NELSON MANDELA’S FAMILY SAID

Despite some South Africans being vocal about the conspiracy theory, his family denied it.

Among the family members was Zindzi Mandela, the daughter of the late former president, who responded on Twitter (X).

Zindzi Mandela made a lengthy Twitter thread that addressed the issue, calling out the founders of this theory.

She claimed that the people pushing such a conspiracy theory needed mental assistance.

She also cleared the air about his death, shooting down the rumours that he died in 1985 aged 67.

NELSON MANDELA FOUNDATION AND THE GIBSON MAKANDA THEORIES

Besides the Mandela family, the Nelson Mandela Foundation also had a few to say about the conspiracy theory.

The Foundation claimed that such theories were all targeting to degrade the legacy of Nelson Mandela.

Despite all the responses from official communication, it seemed some South Africans still believed in the Makanda theory.

However, more information about Nelson Mandela’s legacy and facts can be found in the Archive at the Centre Of Memory.

This platform was established against the backdrop of controversial conspiracy theories.
