Petronella’s ‘Sis Patty’ real name is Thembsie Matu born in 1966 and is currently 57 years old. She is a South African bubbly, hilarious and comedic actress and TV presenter born in Katlehong, Gauteng, South Africa. She is best known for her role as Petronella in The Queen.
She grew up with her mother after her father abandoned them. She was married for 36 years to the late Peter Sebotsa who was an Anglican minister.Her husband was found drowned in the family’s pool in June 2019. Matu has one daughter Namosa and one son Unathi. She resides in Brackendowns, Alberton.
She is best known for the roles in the television series such as Tshisa, Rockville and The Queen. Thembsie has been active on TV since 1987 until present. In 1987 she made her professional stage debut in the play Sekunjalo. After that she played in the plays What A Shame in 1989 and Give A Child the same year.
However, her most popular role came through the Mzansi Magic Telenovela The Queen when she played the character Petronella until 2021.
Thembsie played various roles in several drama series namely, Mama’s Love, Lahliwe in 1999, Tshisa in 2006, The Lab until 2008, uGugu no Andile in 2008, Rhythm City, Zone 14, Gaz’lam, Home Affairs, Zero Tolerance, Jacob’s Cross, Finding Lenny in 2009, Abo Mzala, Intsika in 2011, Soul Buddyz, The Wild, Moferefere Lenyalong, Rockville, AboMzala, Thandeka’s Diary, MTV Shuga and Thuli noThulani amongst others.
In 2014, she was nominated for the best Supporting Actress in a TV drama at the South African Film and Television Awards. She was also nominated for the Diva Extraordinaire of the year at the 2018 Feather Awards. In 2018, she also won the awards for the Favourite Actress and Ultimate Viewers’ Choice awards at the 2018 DSTv Mzansi Viewers’ Choice Awards.
Apart from television acting, she appeared in the popular commercial for the insecticide Doom. In 2019, she co-hosted the show ‘Fragrance Your Life’ aired on etv.
Thembsie is constantly described as a fun-loving person with a bubbly personality. She continues to use her celebrity status to give back to the community to make her country better. She has got her own agency and training school for up and coming actors called Thembsie Matu Dramatic Arts School.
In 2021, the South African actress was confined to the Netcare Clinton Hospital for five weeks due to covid 19. She has since been vaccinated an urges her fellow South Africans to do likewise.
