Johann Rupert is a South African businessman and chairman of the Swiss-based luxury goods company Richemont. He is one of the wealthiest men in South Africa and has a net worth estimated at $11.1 billion as of 2023.

Early Life

Rupert was born on the 1st of June, 1950, in Stellenbosch, South Africa. He is the son of Anton Rupert, a South African business magnate, and Huberte Rupert, a former fashion model. He has two siblings, Hanneli Rupert-Koegelenberg and Anthonij Rupert. He attended Stellenbosch University, receiving a Bachelor of Business Science degree in 1972 and a Master of Business Science in 1974.

Rupert attended Stellenbosch University, obtaining a Bachelor of Business Science degree in 1972 and a Master of Business Science in 1974.

Career

Rupert began his career as a trader at Rand Merchant Bank in 1975. In 1979, he founded Rembrandt Group, a tobacco and investment company. In 1988, he purchased a controlling stake in Rothmans International, a leading British tobacco company, and merged it with Rembrandt Group. In 1997, he formed a new holding company, Compagnie Financiere Richemont, which owns a number of luxury brands, including Cartier, Montblanc, and Van Cleef & Arpels.
