Early Life
Rupert was born on the 1st of June, 1950, in Stellenbosch, South Africa. He is the son of Anton Rupert, a South African business magnate, and Huberte Rupert, a former fashion model. He has two siblings, Hanneli Rupert-Koegelenberg and Anthonij Rupert. He attended Stellenbosch University, receiving a Bachelor of Business Science degree in 1972 and a Master of Business Science in 1974.

Rupert began his career as a trader at Rand Merchant Bank in 1975. In 1979, he founded Rembrandt Group, a tobacco and investment company. In 1997, he formed a new holding company, Compagnie Financiere Richemont, which owns a number of luxury brands, including Cartier, Montblanc, and Van Cleef & Arpels.
