In 2019, Mbedu starred in the television series, Is’Thunzi, for which she received a South African Film and Television Award for Best Actress in a Television Drama. She was also nominated for Best Actress in a Television Series at the 2020 International Emmy Awards. In 2021, Mbedu was cast in the lead role of Cora in the Amazon Prime Video series, The Underground Railroad. Her performance has earned her numerous accolades, including an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie.
