Julius Sello Malema, born on 3 March 1981, is a South African politician who serves as the Leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), a far-left South African political party, since its founding in July 2013. He previously served as president of the African National Congress Youth League from 2008 to 2012.

Early Life
Malema was born in Seshego, a township outside Polokwane in South Africa’s Limpopo province. His mother, a domestic worker, and his grandmother raised him. Malema attended high school at Mohlakaneng High School in Seshego, where he was a member of the school’s debating team and was elected as a Student Representative Council member.
Education
Malema did his highschool at Mohlakaneng High School in Limpompo. After finishing his matric, he couldn’t proceed to tertiary education because of financial disputes, becoming a politician. After many years of being a politician and activist, Malema returned to school to improve his knowledge, skills and greater self-advocacy.
In 2010 he graduated with a two-year diploma in Youth Development from the University of South Africa (UNISA). Malema wanted more knowledge when dealing with the youths, so he opted for that diploma.
A year after graduating with a diploma, Malema registered at UNISA UNISA for a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and African Languages and graduated in March 2016.
In 2020 Julius Malema was on top trends after graduating with his BA in Philosophy from UNISA. He recently announced that he is studying for a Master’s at the University of the Witwatersrand. Mzansi praised him for inspiring the youth by proving that education is essential to one’s life.

Political Career
Malema’s political career began when he joined the African National Congress (ANC) in 1994 at the age of 13. In 2002, he became the branch chairperson of the ANC Youth League in Seshego. In 2003, he was elected provincial secretary for the ANC Youth League in Limpopo. In 2004, he was elected president of the ANC Youth League in Limpopo, a post he held until 2008.
In 2008, he was elected president of the ANC Youth League at the national level. He held this post until he was expelled from the ANC in April 2012. In 2013, Malema founded the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and was elected president. The party has been influential in the South African Parliament since its inception, and Malema is widely regarded as one of the most influential politicians in South Africa.

Malema is married to Mantwa Matlala-Malema and has four children, two daughters and two sons.

Controversy
Malema has been involved in several controversies during his political career. In 2011, he was charged with money laundering, fraud and racketeering related to an R52 million tender awarded to On-Point Engineering, a company in which he was a director. The charges were later dropped due to a lack of evidence. In 2018, Malema was charged with hate speech for his remarks about white people in South Africa.
